Jan Meek 13th November 2008

Posted by Beryl on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, In : Previous Meetings
On Tuesday 18th November we were entertained by Jan Meek - what a lady!  Her presentation was so inspirational, everyone was enthralled.  She told us about her walk to the magnetic North Pole and showed slides giving some idea of the natural beauty created there.  She was subsequently invited to walk to the geographical North Pole with explorer David Templeman-Adams and had previously rowed the Atlantic in a 23ft 'canoe' with her son.

Her enthusiasm and ability to transport everyone on the jo...

AIS - Ship Automatic Identification System

Posted by Bob on Saturday, November 15, 2008, In : Ship Movements

There's a really comprehensive description at Wikipedia for AIS but in addition there's lots of other very interesting information on the Internet: have a look at the information available for the Solent area at Solent Ship Tracking. This superb site is well worth a look for other information as well!! Another good one is Lands End Live which shows you which ships are currently rounding Lands End. For UK information and a complete view, by map, of the UK have a look at ShipAIS - Watching the ...

RNLI and new Ofcom charges

Posted by Mike on Friday, November 14, 2008, In : News
The background:   (From the Telegraph..)

LIFEBOAT crews fear being scuppered by crippling new charges for using their radios from Ofcom, the communications regulator. The RNLI could see the price of using its VHF emergency frequencies rise to £250,000 under plans to charge the full commercial rate.

The charity, which saves hundreds of lives every year currently pays an annual £48,000 at a discounted rate of 50 per cent. It relies on donations and fears the move will have a disastrous impact...

Mike Streets & Chris Bassam 4th November 2008

Posted by Beryl on Monday, November 10, 2008, In : Previous Meetings
The meeting on 4th November saw the return of Mike Streets and Chris Bassam, previously club members, who gave us some very interesting 'food for thought' about keeping and sailing a boat in the Caribbean.  Mike & Chris sailed the Atlantic in 2002 with the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) and their boat Reverie has been based in Granada ever since.  Over the past few years, they have spent many months sailing these waters and were very informative about the experience and knowledge they have...

Mike Streets & Chris Bassam 4th November 2008

Posted by Bob on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, In : Previous Meetings

Tuesday  saw a very welcome return of Mike Streets and Chris Bassam to MCCC. Mike and Chris have now had six years cruising in the Caribbean and during that time have covered the area in great depth.

We heard some fascinating details of life out there living amongst the Islands: how often entering each island requires entry and exit formalities to be completed as they are often different countries. Members were given some good tips about anchoring and how in all those years Mike and Chris ha...
