Having had to cancel our second meeting in January due to bad weather it was nice to be back in better weather.

It must be everyone's dream to sell up and head south towards the sun! Ron and Sue showed us the other option: to half sell up. Spend the winter months at home and the better weather in the sun living that dream. Tuesday 8th January 2013 Bernard Heath - Morocco bound

Last night Bernard Heath, assisted by Beryl, told us about a trip to Morocco in their motor home in the Spring of 2012. They travelled from the South of Spain, across to Ceuta, then into Morocco;  in the company of about 20 other motor homes. A fascinating and thought provoking story it was too. Bernard illustrated the talk with some amusing anecdotes and fabulous photographs. Maybe a few more of us will follow in their footsteps!

Tuesday 4th December David Hicken Pageant Skipper Guard Boat to a Queen

David Hicken told us in great style about the wonderful pageant held in June to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. He gave us the inside story of how he and his crew helped escort the Queen, along with about 1,000 other vessels, down the Thames during the pageant. He was in charge of one of the guard boats from the ex Royal Yacht Britannia and he enthusiastically delighted us with his story and showed us some superb photographs of the pageant.

Tuesday 20th November Keith Beddard - A Cruise to Scotland

What a fantastic night! With another packed out club room we heard how Keith and his wife Barbara spent last summer cruising the NW coast of Scotland via the Isle of Man. They re-visited many of their favourite places: mainly seen before from the mountain tracks. Tuesday 23rd October Mark Burkes Clipper Round the World Race 2011-2012

The first night of our 2012 - 2013 season got off to a cracking start with Mark Burkes telling us all about his experience during a storm in the Pacific Ocean during the Clipper Round the World - 40,000 miles Race.  
He was a watch leader aboard the Geraldtown Western Australia, when she was 'pooped' by a very large wave 400 miles out from California.

Chris Allen gave us a splendid presentation last week with his talk about steamships through the ages. He covered in great detail the very first steamships leading up through paddle steamers to modern day warships. Chris has an impressive knowledge of all things powered by steam! Last night we had a full house to listen to David & Chris Homer recounting their trip aboard the Barque "Europa" around Cape Horn to Antarctica. A gripping story of how they joined the crew as they headed south down to Drakes Passage. The new season got off to a good start on Tuesday with a good attendance and much laughter as we caught up with each other after the summer away. The skittles went well, won by Bob (much to his surprise!), with Graham a close second.

There was a good attendance at the 37th AGM held at Ashwood Marina Social Club on the 29th March. This was followed by a fish and chip supper again from the excellent chip shop in Wallheath.

Last Tuesday Brian Hammett gave us a fascinating insight into the life of Arthur Ransome the author of the well known series of children's books "Swallows and Amazons".  Brian told us how he had discovered an original, unpublished manuscript by Arthur; written just after his second marriage to Evgenia (a former secretary of Trotsky). A wonderful 'home grown' evening on motorhoming - a great deal of information on many aspects of this activity both in the UK and Europe.  
 
Bob put in a lot of work to produce an excellent presentation on a vast subject, I felt we could have gone on for days.  There's nothing quite like arriving at a new destination in a boat but a motorhome gets you to so many places and that's just the start.

Last night we were entertained by two of our own members. Barry Corlett had lovely photos and memories of his trip to the Scilly Isles last summer - he and Heather had had a 'swell' time (thanks to the Atlantic Ocean effect)!
 
Andrew Tooby took us to Brittany around Morbihan and some of the lovely inlets and anchorages. His experience and knowledge of this sailing area is quite extensive.

We were entertained by Adrienne Hyde on 16th February. She told us about her adventure on board the Clipper boat 'Hull and Humber'. She had sailed four legs of the Clipper Round the World race and gave us a wonderful insight into a very

Tuesday 2nd February Trevor Horne RNLI Sea Check

A very interesting night as Trevor Horne one of the RNLI's Sea Check Volunteers gave a very informative presentation on the RNLI Sea Check Scheme. This is a FREE service provided by the RNLI to all boat owners. Trevor emphasised the need to wear life jackets at all times when out in our boats. Lifejackets, Sea ancchors, flares, extinguishers, Safety harnesses, Epirbs, First Aid, Survival courses were just some of the many topics he touched on.

Tuesday 19th January Paul, Rose & Katie Miller Biscay and OSTAR

On Tuesday 19th we were entertained by Paul & Rose Miller and their daughter Katie.
 
Paul told us how they had started sailing after a flotilla holiday in Greece.  They had been 'hooked' and gone on to complete competency courses before buying their own boat in which they had sailed the Biscay Triangle - a rally organised by Yachting Monthly.

Tuesday 1st December David Jewkes Chief Engineer Offficer P&O Cruises

Last night we were privileged to welcome David Jewkes, Chief Engineer with P&O Lines
who gave an excellent presentation on three of the P&O ships he has worked on.  He 
outlined some of the difficulties encountered when things went wrong - an engine (electric
propulsion) failure, a freak wave causing damage to windows and cabins and a newly 
commissioned liner's engine vibration problems.  He briefly outlined how all these problems

Andy & Nicky Gibb have sailed their boat Intrepid of Dover, a 40 ft Westerly Oceanlord across the Atlantic 3 times and completed a circumnavigation in 2007.

They sail with family and friends who join and leave the boat at various stages.

Gil Haywood Tues 3rd February “Keeping a boat in the Mediterranean.”

Dick Bennett - a trip to Iceland 20th January 2009

On January 20th we accompanied Dick Bennett on a trip to Iceland on his lovely boat, a
freedom rigged 35ft ketch "Serrann".  The slides and his excellent commentary were a
joy.  However, the tale became very exciting on the return journey . A very heavy storm
hit them mid-way from Iceland to Scotland and there was no escape.  The boat weathered
the storm for some time but then "the biggest bang I've ever heard in my life" and his next
recollection was being in the raging sea some yards away from ...

Members Night and Quiz 6th January 2009

Despite Arctic conditions there was a good turn out for our members night this year.

Bernard, from his days as a Glider Pilot Instructor gave us a fascinating insight into the day of a typical gliding instruction outing. "First get your victim then bolt the plane together!" Christmas Party Tuesday 16th December 2008

Christmas Party and Sail Drive. This was a superb night! Great food and good company!
Washed down with mince pies and a nautical version of a "Beetle Drive" called "Sail Drive". Many thanks to Beryl for pulling it all togther, the committee and all those who helped in any way: provided food and raffle prizes, attended and joined in the fun. Thanks to Alan and Mike for running the raffle and Alan for producing the "Sail Drive".

Christmas Party - Natter & Noggin Tuesday 16th December 2008

This, the last meeting of 2008 is an oppportunity to meet up for a Natter & Noggin and look forward to 2009.
There will be a small charge of £5 per head. Menu: Pork baps with apple sauce/seasoning and vegetarian quiche, onions and pickles. Pavlova, trifle and mince pies followed by coffee and mints.To keep us entertained Alan is organising a "nautical" Beetle Drive and to round off the night there will be a mystery raffle. Ron Morgan 2nd December 2008

What an interesting evening this turned out to be! Once again we had a very good turnout and Ron gave an excellent talk on boat electrics and in particular battery management. He even threw in some good advice on how to solder! Also some tips on fan belt tightning! From the number of questions from the floor this proved a worthy topic for discussion and one that Ron handled very well. Another demonstration of the skills and talent sitting amongst us!

Jan Meek 13th November 2008

On Tuesday 18th November we were entertained by Jan Meek - what a lady!  Her presentation was so inspirational, everyone was enthralled.  She told us about her walk to the magnetic North Pole and showed slides giving some idea of the natural beauty created there.  She was subsequently invited to walk to the geographical North Pole with explorer David Templeman-Adams and had previously rowed the Atlantic in a 23ft 'canoe' with her son.

Mike Streets & Chris Bassam 4th November 2008

The meeting on 4th November saw the return of Mike Streets and Chris Bassam, previously club members, who gave us some very interesting 'food for thought' about keeping and sailing a boat in the Caribbean.  Mike & Chris sailed the Atlantic in 2002 with the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) and their boat Reverie has been based in Granada ever since.  Over the past few years, they have spent many months sailing these waters and were very informative about the experience and knowledge they have...

Mike Streets & Chris Bassam 4th November 2008

Tuesday  saw a very welcome return of Mike Streets and Chris Bassam to MCCC. Mike and Chris have now had six years cruising in the Caribbean and during that time have covered the area in great depth.

Terry & Monica Darlington 21st October 2008

Our first meeting of the season was quite well attended to hear Monica and Terry Darlington recount their adventure on the USA East Coast Intracoastal Waterway.  Monica's descriptions interspersed with Terry's reading of a few pertinent extracts from his best selling books made for a very interesting evening.  It must surely have given many of the audience food for thought (and laying of a few possible plans) during the long winter evenings.
