Tuesday 5th February - Ron Morgan Half sell up and sail

Posted by Bob on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, In : Previous Meetings
Having had to cancel our second meeting in January due to bad weather it was nice to be back in better weather.

It must be everyone's dream to sell up and head south towards the sun! Ron and Sue showed us the other option: to half sell up. Spend the winter months at home and the better weather in the sun living that dream. They headed south for Portugal and with great enthusiasm Ron described, with the aid of some wonderful photographs just how they did it. The club room was full and both Ron ...

However, we have good reason to believe that Government is seriously considering taking British Waterways’ assets and selling...

Members Night and Quiz 6th January 2009

Posted by Web Master on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, In : Previous Meetings
Despite Arctic conditions there was a good turn out for our members night this year.

Bernard, from his days as a Glider Pilot Instructor gave us a fascinating insight into the day of a typical gliding instruction outing. "First get your victim then bolt the plane together!" He recalled the days of going solo for the first time when the canopy was shut above you and you looked up to realise the Instructor was outside the aircraft and you were on your own. He told how the "Tug" plane would some...

Ron Morgan 2nd December 2008

Posted by Bob on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, In : Previous Meetings
What an interesting evening this turned out to be! Once again we had a very good turnout and Ron gave an excellent talk on boat electrics and in particular battery management. He even threw in some good advice on how to solder! Also some tips on fan belt tightning! From the number of questions from the floor this proved a worthy topic for discussion and one that Ron handled very well. Another demonstration of the skills and talent sitting amongst us!

Jan Meek 13th November 2008

Posted by Beryl on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, In : Previous Meetings
On Tuesday 18th November we were entertained by Jan Meek - what a lady!  Her presentation was so inspirational, everyone was enthralled.  She told us about her walk to the magnetic North Pole and showed slides giving some idea of the natural beauty created there.  She was subsequently invited to walk to the geographical North Pole with explorer David Templeman-Adams and had previously rowed the Atlantic in a 23ft 'canoe' with her son.

Her enthusiasm and ability to transport everyone on the jo...

There's a really comprehensive description at Wikipedia for AIS but in addition there's lots of other very interesting information on the Internet: have a look at the information available for the Solent area at Solent Ship Tracking. This superb site is well worth a look for other information as well!! Another good one is Lands End Live which shows you which ships are currently rounding Lands End. RNLI and new Ofcom charges

Posted by Mike on Friday, November 14, 2008, In : News
The background:   (From the Telegraph..)

LIFEBOAT crews fear being scuppered by crippling new charges for using their radios from Ofcom, the communications regulator. The RNLI could see the price of using its VHF emergency frequencies rise to £250,000 under plans to charge the full commercial rate.

The charity, which saves hundreds of lives every year currently pays an annual £48,000 at a discounted rate of 50 per cent. It relies on donations and fears the move will have a disastrous impact...

Mike Streets & Chris Bassam 4th November 2008

Posted by Beryl on Monday, November 10, 2008, In : Previous Meetings
The meeting on 4th November saw the return of Mike Streets and Chris Bassam, previously club members, who gave us some very interesting 'food for thought' about keeping and sailing a boat in the Caribbean.  Mike & Chris sailed the Atlantic in 2002 with the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) and their boat Reverie has been based in Granada ever since.  Over the past few years, they have spent many months sailing these waters and were very informative about the experience and knowledge they have...

Mike Streets & Chris Bassam 4th November 2008

Posted by Bob on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, In : Previous Meetings

Tuesday  saw a very welcome return of Mike Streets and Chris Bassam to MCCC. Mike and Chris have now had six years cruising in the Caribbean and during that time have covered the area in great depth.

We heard some fascinating details of life out there living amongst the Islands: how often entering each island requires entry and exit formalities to be completed as they are often different countries. Members were given some good tips about anchoring and how in all those years Mike and Chris ha...

Terry & Monica Darlington 21st October 2008

Posted by Beryl on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, In : Previous Meetings
Our first meeting of the season was quite well attended to hear Monica and Terry Darlington recount their adventure on the USA East Coast Intracoastal Waterway.  Monica's descriptions interspersed with Terry's reading of a few pertinent extracts from his best selling books made for a very interesting evening.  It must surely have given many of the audience food for thought (and laying of a few possible plans) during the long winter evenings.

Their visit was well received and enjoyed by eve...
